1914-18 War Services: employed with the K.A.R. commanding the 2/1st and 4/1st Battalions in British, German and Portugese East Africa, Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia, Despatches 3-8-1916 and 25-9-1917. Awarded the D.S.O. and French War Cross.

Group of 7 miniatures attributed to Brig.-Gen. F. D. Hammond, Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.B.E. Military 1st type), Distinguished Service Order Geo.V, Queen’s South Africa Medal swivel suspender 5 clasps “Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902”, 1914 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal with oak leaf, France Officer of the Legion of Honour, mounted on a bar as worn.
Brigadier General Frederick Dawson Hammond was an authority on railways, He was born on10 November 1881 . the son of Colonel F. Hammond 5th Punjab Cavalry and was educated at Eton and commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1900. He served in the South African War from 1901 to 1902. During the 1914-18 War he was awarded the D.S.O., created a C.B.E., mentioned in despatches 7 times and became a Brevet Lt.-Col. After the war he began his career as a railway advisor and travelled the world extensively. The Legion of Honour was gazetted on 10 October 1918.

Group of 7 miniatures, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal with M.I.D. oakleaf, Royal Naval Reserve Decoration George V, Russian Order of St. Anne with Swords, Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal (unsuccessful), Greece Silver Medal of Merit.
Captain William Pearson Townshend, R.D. was born in 1875 and joined the
P. & O. in 1897 and served with them from 1897 to 1935 reaching the rank of Commander.
Royal Humane Society’s Bronze Medal, awarded when 3rd Officer of the “Assaye” he plunged into the harbour at CapeTown in an attempt to save a soldier (Pte. J. Bannard of the Hampshire Regt.) who had fallen overboard. Although he dived under several times, he was unable to locate the man who drowned.
He saw service in the 1914-18 war and was awarded the Russian Order of St. Anne, for service on the Battleship “Caesar “ in 1920, while Assistant Captain of Port, Constantinople.
Mentioned in Despatches in the London Gazette 11 April 1919 for services on the Mediterranean Station.
Awarded the Greek Naval Medal of Merit while Commander of the S.S. “Viceroy of India” for rescue work at the wreck of the Greek steamer “Theododos Bulgaris” in the Bay of Biscay on New Year’s Eve 1930.
His retirement was covered in the Lloyd’s List of 1935 and he died on 24 March 1949. With copied information and photographs.
