 WW1 1914-15 Trio & Italian War Cross, - 48 Div. Sig. Coy. R.E.
Group of 4, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Italian War Cross “Croce de Guerra” the trio is named to 1494 Corporal E. H. Male, Royal Engineers.
The award of the Italian War Cross was announced in the London Gazette of the 17 May 1919 “Decorations and Medals conferred by His Majesty the King of Italy, the Croce de Guerra to 500125 Mechanist Corporal Ernest Henry Male, 48th Divisional Signal Company, Royal Engineers “Territorial Force” (Barnstaple). With an original photograph of Cpl. Male being presented with the cross by an Italian Officer in front of the regiment.
The recipient’s Medal Index Card shows entry into France on the 31 March 1915, it also confirms the change of number to “50125”.
Believed to have been born Taunton 1884 & married Chard 1912.

Imp.) clasp “Territorial” only the last medal is named to 20665141 Bombardier R. W. Harding, Royal Artillery. Bdr. Harding was mentioned in Dispatches for gallant and distinguished services in Burma, this was announced in the Supplement to the London Gazette of 10 January, 1946.

D.S.O. L.Gazette 22 December 1916, Lieutenant Royal Indian Marine.”For distinguished Service in the Field Mesopotamia”. Later commissioned into the Inland Water Transport R.E. Mentioned in Despatches x 4, London Gazette 15 August 1917, 12 March 1918, 27 August 1918 and 21 February 1919. With various copied documents. His Medal Index Card shows entry into Mesopotamia on 1 December 1917 and later service with the Royal Air Force, the O/C R.A.F. Basrah forwarding his name for the G.S.M. “Iraq”.

Group of 4, Military Medal George V, (Gnr., “A” Bty., B Brigade, R.F.A.), 1914-15 Star (Gnr.), British War and Victory Medals (Dvr.) named to 37385 B. McCoy, Royal Field Artillery.
The Medal Index Card of Bernard McCoy shows entry into France on 15 July 1915, it also confirms the change of rank.
M.M. Gazetted 21 October 1916.

Group of 5, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star clasp “8th Army”, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, 1939-45 War Medal with M.I.D. oak leaf, unnamed as awarded but with the named box of issue with conveyance slip which confirms the medals and emblems (no Defence Medal is noted)
M.I.D. L. Gazette 23 May 1946 (a copy with the Medals), 996504 Gunner A. Mason, for gallant and distinguished service in the Mediterranean Theatre.
The box of issue is addressed to Mr. A. Mason, 9 Commercial Road, Bournemouth, Hants.

D.S.O. & M.B.E. group, Lt.-Col. Draffen, Scottish Rifles, Slightly wounded at Spion Kop.
Group of 7, Distinguished Service Order George V, Member of the Order of the British Empire (M.B.E. Civil 2nd type), Queen’s South Africa Medal 1899-1902 4 clasps “Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Laing’s Nek, South Africa 1901” (Lieutenant), 1914-15 Star (Captain and Adjutant), British War and Victory Medals with oakleaf emblem (Lt.-Colonel), 1937 Coronation Medal.
Lieutenant Colonel Frederick George William Draffen was born 21 February 1880 and educated at St. Paul’s School. He was commissioned on 18 October 1899 into the Scottish Rifles, being slightly wounded at Spion Kop. At the outbreak of WW1 he was serving as Adjutant with the 6th Battalion and was wounded again on the 15 June 1915. When he had recovered from this wound he was promoted to Major on 1 September 1915 and went on to command the 13th Battalion of the Sussex Regiment and later the 1st Battalion Cameronians the Scottish Rifles being wounded twice more. His services as a Gold Staff Officer at the 1937 Coronation Service was recognised with the award of the Coronation Medal.
The award of the D.S.O. was announced in the London Gazette of 1 January 1917.
The M.B.E. (Civil) awarded as a “Retired Officer, War Office”, extracted form “The Times” 4 January 1943.
A portrait photograph of this officer in uniform wearing his medals in about 1920 is obtainable from the “National Portrait Gallery”.

M.M. & Pair, Sgt. Foote, 16 Rifle Bde., D. of W.
Group of 3, Military Medal George V, British War Medal, Victory Medal named to P/785 Sgt. A. W. Foote, 16th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Alfred William Foote
lived in Stamford Hill, Middlesex and was the husband of Daisy Garrett (formerly Foote) of “Beaucroft” King’s Head Hill, Chingford, Essex. He died of wounds (at Home) on 4 October 1917 aged 23 and is commemorated on the
“Screen Wall” Memorial in “Abney Park Cemetery”. The M.M. was announced in the London Gazette of 2 November 1917 a month after the recipient died, his
Medal Index Card shows he was not entitled to a Star.
