Burma Star group of 4, Tpr. Kinsey, Royal Armoured Corps
1939-45 Star, Burma Star War, Medal, G.S.M. “S.E. Asia 1945-46” only the last medal is named to 14985365 Trooper W, Kinsey, Royal Armoured Corps.
W Kinsey probably enlisted c.1942 and was eventually alloted to the Royal Armoured Corps (RAC).
He was posted to 9th Battalion (Bn), Duke of Wellington’s Regt (West Riding), which converted to become 146th Regiment RAC, under command of Lt Col Richard Leslie Agnew (Commanding Officer 1943-46). In 1943, 146th Regt moved to India in preparation for operations in Burma, where it was to be engaged in and play a notable part in the Battles of Arakan, the drive on Rangoon and the liberation of Burma 1943-45. Subsequent to the Japanese surrender in Burma, the Regt also played a distinguished role on operations in Indonesia 1945-46 and peacekeeping during Indian Independence 1947, as part of the Punjab Boundary Force.
The first part of 146th RAC to see action was the half Squadron (Sqn) attached to XVth Corps for experience. From late 1944, 146th RAC formed part of 50th Indian Tank Brigade (50th Ind Tk Bde), now equipped with Lee/Grants, the Sqns being attached to formations as required. On 19 Nov 1944, 146th RAC sqns embarked at Chittagong for forward ops. ‘A’ Sqn, attached to 71st Indian Infantry Brigade, 26th Indian Division (Ind Div), took part in the assault landings on Ramree Island during the successful seizure of the Burmese capital, Rangoon, 21 Jan – 12 Feb 1945. Operations continued in Burma until the Japanese unconditional surrender in late Aug 1945.
Subsequently elements of 146th RAC were to serve in Indonesia attempting to keep the peace whilst Returned Allied POWs and Internees (RAPWI) were extracted from Japanese POW camps spread through the Indonesian archipeligo and functional civil government re-established. Two Indian Divs -5th and 23rd, were landed in Sep 1945 and not withdrawn until Apr 1946. The British element of the force was small, the huge majority being Indian or Gurkha troops. Drawn into fighting with Indonesian nationalists, the British-Indian force lost 60 killed, 5 murdered and some 2000 wounded. The Indonesians promised total resistance and launched such a campaign of death and wanton destruction that surrendered Japanese troops were rearmed and suffered casualties in support of British forces. Despite sustained strife, the internees, POWs and 68,000 Japanese were evacuated.
Post-Indonesia, 146th RAC returned to India and in Jan 1947 was at Sialkot where it disbanded, it’s personnel being absorbed by 7th Royal Tank Regt (RTR). By Mar 1947, 7th RTR’s Sqns were located as follows: ‘A’ Sqn, Lahore; ‘B’ Sqn, Amritsar; ‘C’ Sqn, Jullundur; as part of what was to become Punjab Boundary Force (PBF). With Indian Independence and Partition in Aug 1947, Punjab was summarily divided between Pakistan and India, leaving many of the affected communities on the ‘wrong’ side of a new international Pakistan/India border. Inter-communal violence arose from the huge movements of people and the abandonment of their land, and resulted in some XXX civilian casualties despite the best efforts of the PBF enforce order, separate angry groups transiting Punjab and deal with the aftermath of massacres. This difficult duty must have been truly depressing to the young British servicemen of 7 RTR/(146th RAC) after the hard campaigns in Burma and Indonesia In Sep 1947, Indian Independence and Partition achieved, 7 RTR was withdrawn and embarked U.K.
